Dear participants and friends,

It is very meaningful that we meet in Nagasaki from all over the world to express our common desire to join with the Japanese people in the effort to defend peace, oppose war and achieve a total ban on nuclear weapons.

Allow me, on behalf of the Chinese People's Association for Disarmament and Peace, to express support for this World Conference. I also want to state that the peace-loving 1.3 billion Chinese people are with you all.

If we are to prohibit nuclear weapons completely, we need to establish peaceful international relations. After experiencing the calamities of the two world wars, wishes for peace have taken root deep in the hearts of the people of the world, and the cause of world peace has become more powerful than ever.

Humanity has entered the 21st century. The world needs peace; the people of the world need cooperation; and society must make progress. This is the trend of the present-day world.

During the last two decades of the 20th century, China achieved remarkable socio-economic development.

We firmly believe that the effort to build China requires a peaceful international climate and that its social progress is inseparable from the common development of all countries.

China always serves as the core power for world peace and as a power to help develop common efforts for peace. China's development will further wield positive influence on peace and development throughout the world.

History shows that the obsolete thinking that arms buildup based on military alliances is necessary does not help strengthen international security and achieve lasting world peace, and that new awareness of the need for security must be established based on "mutual trust, mutual benefit, equal rights and cooperation". Politically, nations of the world should respect each other and value discussions; economically, they should work to promote each other's development; culturally, they should learn from each other to prosper; and in the area of security, they should trust each other and defend this attitude. International disputes can be resolved and peace achieved only through discussions and negotiations on an equal footing.

The great power of world peace is in the hands of the people of the world. As champions of the cause of peace, we have important responsibilities for the defense of world peace and common development. The responsibility is great, and we will have to go a long way to fulfill it. Let us join hands with all people in the world to exert our efforts to achieve peace free of nuclear threats and to build a new beautiful world.

Thank you for your attention.
